Derek M. "Woody" Woods

November 04, 1943 - March 31, 2017

In Loving Memory

Derek M. "Woody" Woods, 73, of Aberdeen, MD, passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 31, 2017. Born on November 4, 1943 on North Island, CA, he was the son of the late Elwyn and Hanna Jo (Shannon) Woods. Woody graduated in 1962 from York Community High School in Elmhurst, IL, and attended Culver-Stockton College where he studied Business Administration. He also attended the American Conservatory of Music for vocal study. After college, he tried his luck in Hollywood, under contract with G/E Artists, gathering experience on "Bonanza," "Gunsmoke," and "Combat" as a character actor. While there, he was drafted and then served as Sergeant in the United States Army from 1965 to 1968 during the Vietnam War. On leave at home in Chicago, he met his future wife, Bernadette (Richards). In October of 1969, they married and soon after relocated to Maryland, and then to Stewartstown, PA, where Woody worked for many years for Household Merchandising/Ben Franklin, and then for the Keebler Company, as Traffic Manager for both companies. They had three children together. After his wife's passing, Woody relocated back to Maryland, embracing his love for the outdoors by working for 15 years at the Eagle's Nest and Lighthouse Sound Golf Courses. For the past 5 years, he worked at the Perry Point VA Medical Center in the Environment Management Service department, where he was awarded the Gold VA Pin for going "above and beyond" the call of duty to be in assistance to others, a quality he demonstrated regularly. He thoroughly enjoyed his last years while working at the VA, surrounded by friends and fellow Veterans.

Besides the warmth of summer, Woody loved football season and the Ravens the best, providing recaps of every game each week. A cowboy at heart, he also loved NCIS marathons, action movies, westerns, and sitting outside with his beloved cat, Rocky. Woody could be seen each Veteran's Day donning his Sergeant's uniform in line at the Golden Corral. His daily weather reports and detailed lists will be missed. The family would like to extend their appreciation to the Perry Point VA for the care Woody received while he was ill.

Woody is survived by his daughter, Tanya and son-in-law Francis Iacono of Wilmington, DE; daughter Larissa Woods of Bethlehem, PA; and his son, Jason and daughter-in-law Mindy Woods of Edgewood, MD. He is also survived by his sister, Janet and brother-in-law Paul Parilla, of Lake Forest, CA. He leaves behind 6 grandsons: Devon, Roberto, Julian, Maximus, Wyatt and Gunnar; his nephew, Stephen Parilla, and nieces, Jennifer Parilla and Réa (Woods) Scroggins. In addition to his parents and his wife, Woody was preceded in death by his brother, James W. Woods, of Reeds Spring, MO.

A Memorial Service will held at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 13, 2017 at the All Faiths Chapel at the Perry Point VA Medical Center, Chapel Circle Building 314, PP/125/CS, Perry Point, MD, 21902. Friends and family are welcome to visit from 2:30 - 3:30, prior to the service. Interment will take place at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C., where full military honors will be accorded. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that a memorial donation be made to the VA Maryland Health Care System, Voluntary Service (BT/135), 10 North Greene St., Baltimore, MD 21201.
