Lover of Life, Family, and Chocolate Cake

Stuart Donald Silbar, lover of life, family and chocolate cake, passed away on September 20, 2017 in Hermosa Beach, CA.

He was born on December 4, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois. He was a loving son, brother, husband, father, Gramps, friend and patriot. Stuart proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant. He joined the Navy, completing Officers Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island, in July 1953 with the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade and served in active duty for two years.

Stuart leaves his loving wife Doris; children Jeff, Raymond, Claudia, Adam and their mother Margaret Silbar; son-in-law Thomas Burns; daughters-in-law Kim, Lisa and Debra Silbar; grandchildren Garrett, Natalie, Eliot, Aaron, Cameron, Benjamin, Ryan Burns and Mikayla Burns Zeeb; one great grandchild Caiyus Thomas Zeeb; and his canine companion Dudley. He was preceded by his parents, Raymond and Esther, and his brother, Eliot Silbar. He encouraged his children and grandchildren to be successful, and was always there to listen and give advice. One of his favorite sayings was "If it's your last dime, get a shine."

Stuart earned a B.A. in Speech in 1952 from The Ohio State University (then Ohio State College) where he was a champion bridge player which helped pay his tuition. His extensive career included being a professional magician, managing partner in the Sportswear Mart chain in Lexington, Kentucky, acting in films such as Black Beauty and in television programs like General Hospital. In 1988 he co-founded Pathfinders Health Search with his son Adam.  Stuart enjoyed magic tricks, playing cards and watching football.

A private family memorial will be held in Hermosa Beach, California. In lieu of flowers, please donate to The Salvation Army in his honor.

My heart breaks for all of Mr Silbar's family and friends - especially his daughter and my dear friend, Claudia. I can still picture him on that beautiful day when Claudia and Tom were married. He was still in Cloud 9 when we were at the Burns household and he...
